A couple in eastern China have welcomed nine daughters, all of whom share the Chinese character di or “brother” in their names, reflecting their desire for a son.
The family’s story highlights a traditional preference for male children, particularly in rural areas. It has gained traction on social media in mainland China, as reported by the Shanghai Morning Post.
The nine sisters, with a 20-year age gap between the eldest and the youngest, were born and raised in a village in Huaian, Jiangsu province. Their father, surnamed Ji, who is now 81, chose names for all of them that end with di.
Chinese dad offers US$1.4 million reward to find abducted son, reunites after 24 years | South China Morning Post (scmp.com)
A man in China, who offered a staggering 10 million yuan (US$1.4 million) in his quest to find his son abducted 24 years ago, has finally been reunited with him.
During the reunion ceremony held in Shenzhen, southern China, on March 16, the father, Xie Yue, presented his son, Xie Haonan, with a Mercedes-Benz sedan valued at three million yuan (US$415,000) along with a bank card containing an undisclosed sum set aside for his education.
However, Xie junior declined the gifts, expressing that he does not need them at the moment as he is still pursuing his master’s degree. He emphasised that he believes his future “relies on himself,” as reported by the Southern Metropolis News.
